25 Years Ago -July 1, 1998
When the call of a pickup truck rolling into Kincaid Lake with passengers possibly being trapped within came in to Pendleton County dispatcher Julie Patrick at 6:40 p.m. June 25, the Falmouth Fire Department and Pendleton County EMS were immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, it was discovered that no passengers were entrapped and the pickup owned by Joshua Joseph of Udith, KY, was only partially submerged. No one was injured.
Pendleton County Fiscal Court members held the second reading and adopted by the 1998-99 budget at the June 25 meeting. The county will be operating with a little over $5.7 million budget.
Volunteers have worked to get a shelter ready for the fair so that visitors can sit down at tables and eat, protected from the sun.
Dr. Henry Norfleet will merge his practice with that of Dr. Gregory Cooper of Family Care Associates for the combined care of their patients in Falmouth and Cynthiana and surrounding areas beginning July 1.
The Pendleton County Public Library is now open for business in their newly renovated building at 228 Main Street.
50 Years Ago - June 29, 1973
Lawrence T. Colvin retired Wednesday, June 27, as City Mail Carrier, Falmouth Post Office, after 31 years of faithful, dedicated service.
This year, June 28, the Kentucky Department of Parks will have a "land clearing" at Fort Boonesborough State Park for the rebuilding of Fort Boonesborough.
The home of Joe Raynolds of Beech Street, Falmouth, was struck by lightning at 3:45 a.m. Thursday morning, June 21. No one was injured and little damage was reported done by lightning than by fire to the roof. The loss is reported covered by insurance.
75 Years Ago - July 2, 1948
The Ida Lovelace Farm, situated on the Williamstown Road and one of the best located farms in Pendleton County, was sold at public auction Friday afternoon by Master Commissioner E.E. Barton of Falmouth for a total of $21,351.
H. H. Best, operator of Falmouth Fairgrounds, announces that there is the largest number of horses quartered at the grounds since he has take over, read for the big Fourth of July Celebration on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Pres. Harry S. Truman last week signed the peacetime draft bill. the new law means all men 18 through 25 must register, but only those 19 through 25 will be subject to induction and 21 months service in the regular armed forces.
The National Crow Hunt held at Williamstown over the weekend was won by a Cincinnati man. There were 52 participants and nin States were represented, both new records.
Ralph Lucas, former employee of the C. F. Held Co, and Chester Lucas of Covington have purchased from Tomlin and Dauherty their grocery store on West Shelby St., Falmouth.
Raymond Cookendoerfer, manager of the Pendleton County Airport, and instructor o students, issued private pilot licenses last week to Clarence Rice, Falmouth businessman, and C. Harold Ewing, Attorney.
The State Highway Department has awarded a contract to J. Sneed Yager of Frankfort at a cost of $13,481.20, for the bituminous treatment of the Concord-Caddo Road, McKenneysburg-Browning's Corner Road, and Locust Grove-Morgan Road, according to a dispatch received this week. The total mileage in this improvement is 21 miles.
100 Years Ago - June 29, 1923
Herbert Raymond Arnold, of Morgan, was granted the degree of B. S. in Agriculture at the University of Kentucky June 13, 1923, which makes his fifth diploma from educational institutions.
Keep the baby well during the summer. Feed him at regular intervals. Do not give him candy, ice cream, social water or food between meals. Never give him tea or coffee. Do not give him green fruits or half-cooked vegetables...the baby is a human being, not a play thing; treat him as one.
The Board of Education of the Falmouth school district has fixed the levy for this year at $1 on the $100 taxable property--80 cents for maintaining the school, and 20 cents to pay debt and interest on the outstanding bonds.
The Butler Board of Education has fixed the levy in that district at 85 cents on the $100 taxable property. This is a 15 cent increase over last year.
The Golden Rule Class of the Pleasant Hill Sunday School will give an apron social on the lawn at John Fields' house Saturday night, July 7.
