The still before the storm hit election night in Pendleton County with Democratic candidate Henry Bertram winning the judge/executive race by 156 votes over incumbent Donald R. Mays.
Pendleton County Magistrate Anthony Messmer made the motion in the May 28 meeting of Fiscal Court to sign a contract with Architecture Plus to go into studies for further consideration of constructing a 125-bed jail in Falmouth. The motion was seconded by Magistrate Jack Sumpter and was approved.
Howard Hoess, owner of the Falmouth Dairy Queen Brazier, was awarded a plaque at his establishment on May 25, by the local chapter of the American Red Cross.
Dr. William J. Verax III filed his papers May 25 to run for Pendleton County School Board District 2 (McKenneysburg).
50 Years Ago - June 1, 1973
The Democratic Party is Pendleton County has nominated David Pribble for county judge, Harold Wright for Sheriff, Early Gillespie for jailer, and Howard "Frankie" Ammerman for coroner.
A Campbell County youth, while canoeing with two other friends, drowned in the South Licking at Falmouth below the fishing dam Monday afternoon, May 28th. The dead youth is Nick Kramer 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kramer 122 Kenton Avenue, Melbourne, KY.
Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Gosney wishes to announce the arrival of their fourth son, Mark Edward. He was born May 9 and weighed 8 lbs., 11-1/2 oz.
75 Years Ago - June 4, 1948
Charles E Ashcraft is the new county clerk of Pendleton County. He was sworn into office Tuesday morning, June 1, at 8:15 o'clock by County Judge Early Cummins. He succeeds Robert A. Thompson as clerk.
D.R. Barnes has started work on erecting a warehouse on Second St. opposite the Hart and Doggetet Garage. The Falmouth Farm Supply, which is now located in Mr. Barnes' building on Main St., will move to the Second Street location when it is completed. Bowling alleys and other equipment arrived Monday and were stored in the Main Street property of Mr. Barnes.
The playground is to open June 14, next Monday. The present plan is to have a vehicle parade just prior to the softball game with prizes being given to the best decorated vehicle.
Work on new U.S. 27 in the pouring of concrete has been completed in its entirety between Falmouth and Bost Station. It is expected the new concrete will be open for travel about Monday, June 14.
Commencing June 17, 1948, all persons between the ages of 14 and 16 are required to have license to operate motor vehicles of not more than five horsepower. Applications must be signed by the father, if living; otherwise, by mother or guardian having custody of the child. Fee is $1.
The Falmouth Dam has another endorsement and supporter Hardin-Browning Post No. 106 American Legion.
Leland W. Barnes of Falmouth, R. 4, veterans of World War II, was issued a private pilot's license on May 30, 1948, by Pendleton County Flying Service.
100 Years Ago - June 1, 1923
The Falmouth baseball team has been organized with W.E. Bishop as manager, Rosco Kinman, secretary and treasurer.
Dora Mae Mann, the handsome little daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Herman Mann, and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. M.B. Greenwell, of this county, won the gold medal as first prize in her class from two to three years, shown from Pendleton, Kenton, and Boone Counties, at the John R. Coppin Baby Health Contest held in Covington.
The Cooperative Pure Milk Association have their creamery building at Butler under construction.
Mrs. H. H. Hoffman of Valley View Farm, has a hen that has adopted three kittens and is bestowing a motherly arm over them that would put other mother cats to shame. Some little confusion arises when Mrs. Cat wants to feed her offspring, but this over, the hen returns to her self-impuned duty of raising "cats" instead of chickens.
