Dedication ceremonies for the Phillip A. Sharp Middle School were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 19 with Dr. Phillip Allen Sharp present.
50 Years Ago - April 20, 1973
Kirby Thornberry, well-known Falmouth citizen and former Chief of Police, is reported improving at St. Luke Hospital, Ft. Thomas. His son John Robert Thornberry reports that he suffered a broken jaw in two places and a broken cheekbone. Jimmy Wedding has been charged with assault and battery upon Mr. Thornberry.
Falmouth Police were busy Saturday morning when they were called to kill an alleged mad dog on Park Street near Weaver's Warehouse.
To assure that new state standards do not prevent the continuation of emergency transportation services because of difficulties in meeting health and safety standards, the Kentucky Health Facilities and Health Services Certificate of Need and Licensure Board has agreed to delete all January, 1974 deadlines from its regulations.
Four great races will take place in Louisville during the Kentucky Derby Festival this year. One is a horse race, there is the balloon race and bicycle race, and one of the most exciting is the "Great Steamboat Race." Three days before the horses run at the 99th Kentucky Derby, racing fans will be able to witness the nostalgia of days-gone-by--a race between two of the last sternwheelers in existence, The Belle of Louisville and the Delta Queen of Cincinnati.
75 Years Ago - April 16, 1948
The angry, muddy waters of the Main Licking River are creeping over the city of Falmouth like paralyses, having evicted many people from their homes and threatening to throw the city out of electricity and water and close the city's schools. As we go to press the Main Licking stage is 43 feet, according to Jessie V. Oldham, U.S. Weather observer.
The parking meter case, which has been before the people of Falmouth for several months, has at lasted reached the Court of Appeals at Frankfort with a motion to advance the case, it was learned Monday, April 12.
Allen Flaugher, who has been working out at a St. Louis Cardinal farm club camp at Albany, Ga., returned home last week.
Mrs. William Blades announces in an advertisement on another page in this issue of the formal opening date of her grocery, the Falmouth Food Market.
One of the most important criminal cases to ever be tried in Pendleton Circuit Court--the Charles Warner, Jr., case--was postponed Tuesday because only 17 jurors showed up. It was thought that the high water affected the situation.
Falmouth City Council did not have a quorum for their April meeting Monday night; therefore, their meeting has been postponed until next Monday, April 15. It was announced that the Council now has 18 property owners along the old Cynthiana route where the new spur will be built, signed. It is said only two of the five property owners who have not signed will do so shortly.
Riverside Cemetery now is working under the perpetual care plan which enables families to have their lots cared for in all time to come.
100 Years Ago - April 20, 1923
Grant Caldwell, in a state of emotional insanity, attempted to kill his brother Hayt Caldwell, 45, and then drank the contents of a vial of strychnine and was dead within 15 minutes.
The home of Thurman Bryan, one of Pendleton County's most industrious farmers of near Greenwood, burned Sunday evening, April 8. Mr. and Mrs. Bryan were at the barn milking when they discovered the fire.
Edna Kaffenberger, 15, daughter of Phillip Kaffenberger, California, KY, was awarded the annual trip to Junior Week at Lexington in June. Edna is chairman of the program committee of the St. Peter's Agricultural Club of St. Peter's Schools.
The ladies of the Baptist church will have a window sale of good things to eat at the store of the Applegate Hardware Co. on Saturday, April 21. The public is invited to share in these good things.
In the Winter Egg Laying Contest conducted during the past winter by a number of Campbell County farmers, the flock of Mrs. Joe Heringer, California, Ky., finished first. Mrs. Heringer's flock of 32 Barred Plymouth Rocks averaged 17.5 eggs per hen per month for the five months.
