Edith Bladel reaches the century mark in age

You'd have to be over 100 to remember the March 1913 flood. Edith Blasdel doesn't remember it, but she and her family remember the most important fact from that time: it's when she was born! Blasdel, daughter of George Clarence and Chloe Bentle, was born Thursday, March 21, 1913, at Lights Fork Creek, Ky., said her son Paul Blasdel, Capistrano, Calif.

“The day she was born the creek they lived on was very swollen,” he said. Her dad – his grandpa – rode a horse to Falmouth to get the doctor to assist at the birth.

Man's estate donates to every Kentucky animal shelter

Muhlenberg County dairy farmer Bland Hardison's generous donations to Kentucky's animal shelters will help with supplies, operating costs and maintenance. Pendleton County will use the donation to help with the spay and neuter program.

A mild-mannered western Kentucky farmer who never turned away a stray cat left a portion of his estate to every county-run animal shelter in the state.

County officials received checks earlier this month for $1,432.47 from a man they never met, a Muhlenberg County dairy farmer named Bland Hardison.

Hardison died in 2008 at age 86 and had set up in his will a gift for the state's animal shelters, said his widow, Jonell Hardison. In total, Hardison set aside nearly $1 million in donations to various charities upon his death, and the estate took years to settle.

Todd Moorhead accepts Merit-Based Scholarship to Eastern Ky. University

Pendleton County High School graduate Todd Daniel Moorhead of Falmouth has accepted a Music Department Scholarship at Eastern Kentucky University. Hundreds of additional incoming freshmen and transfer students have accepted merit-based scholarships to attend EKU.

109 Board announces adult scholarships Print E-mail

The Pendleton County 109 Solid Waste Management Board is pleased to announce their fifth year in offering $500 scholarships that will be awarded to a non-traditional adult student in May of 2013. A non-traditional student is an adult that is currently attending college or plans to attend college during the fall 2013 semester.

Although the 109 Board continues to support high school scholarships, they also want to support adults returning to college.

GED graduates are encouraged to apply. Previous recipients are not eligible to reapply. The criteria and applications are available through the local Adult Education Office at 654-3325 Ext. 2601.

The deadline for submitting for this scholarship is April 26, 2013.

 
Northern and Southern Elementary kindergarten registration ~ April 16 Print E-mail

Northern and Southern Elementary kindergarten registration for the 2013-14 school year will begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16 at the child's appropriate school.

You will need to provide the following documents at the time of registration: birth certificate, Social Security card, Kentucky immunization record, physical, eye exam, dental screening, and proof of residency.

Children who are five years of age on or prior to October 1, 2013 are eligible for kindergarten.

Proof of residency is required at the time of enrollment. Please bring a housing contract, a rental agreement, a property tax bill, a utility bill or valid driver’s license.

The required documents must be on file before the first day of school.

Necessary forms may be picked up at registration.
