In 1914, president Woodrow Wilson made the official announcement proclaiming Mother’s Day a national observance that was to be held each year on the second Sunday of May.

Traditionally, Mother’s Day is one of the most widely celebrated events in our nation. On May’s second Sunday, restaurants are filled to overflowing, florists and card companies do a booming business and the phones come alive as children seek to remember the women who gave them life.

“The Pack Rat” Print E-mail

Each of us maybe has a little trait of a pack rat in our personality. A “pack rat” is one who collects or hoards up unneeded items. There are a lot of us ‘old pack rats’ who blame the hard times of the 1930s and 1950s as the cause of our collecting and saving. During those years one was always preparing for a ‘rainy day.’ There were unexpected situations such as sickness, a new baby, taxes, or accidents that would occur and demand funds, and we didn’t have the government to bail us out.

“The Manure Spreader” Print E-mail

Farming is much different now than it was in the 1950s. Today’s farmer has every type of equipment or piece of machinery needed for a job. I know there are still many jobs that require hand and back labor, but many years ago practically all work required hand and manual labor. I think one of the best pieces of equipment that we had when I was growing up was the manure spreader.
