The laundry looks dry on the wash line and is ready to come in and be folded.  Daughters Susan and Verena just came home from detasseling. They are always ready for a shower and getting cleaned up when they come home. I told them to go take a nap after they get cleaned up since they are home earlier today. The rest of the children are all taking a break and doing whatever they want because they worked hard this morning.  Before noon they dug up all of our red potatoes in the garden.  The boys picked my tomatoes and cucumbers.  They brought in 17.5 gallons using five gallon buckets full of cucumbers.  I will probably have enough pickles to last quite awhile after working all of those up.  And  I now think I have enough tomatoes to make a batch of homemade thick and chunky salsa.  It takes 14 pounds to make a batch of it.  It will be good to have our own again.

It is July 30 and 2012 is halfway over already.  A happy fifth birthday to nephew Steven, Jacob and Emma’s son. I find it hard to believe he will be starting school this fall. Time seems to go faster every year.  It looks like a nice day to do laundry.  Last week we had rain every day Monday through Friday.  The rain gave our lawn a boost, so the boys will finish mowing the grass today.  It has been quite a few weeks since they had to mow it last.  Our third cutting of hay is cut and we hope to get it in tonight.  My husband Joe thinks we won’t have enough of our own due to the dry summer.  Hay is very expensive to buy this year because of the drought.

We had a steady rain earlier this morning.  It amounted to almost two-tenths of an inch. Every little bit helps the grass, crops and gardens. Our grass and hay fields are looking a lot greener now. The gardens are looking better and the rain put off needing to water the garden today.  The rainwater seems to boost the garden a lot more than when we water with a sprinkler. The first thing Joseph said when he woke up and heard it raining was, “Oh I am glad we don’t have to water the garden!”

Daughters Susan and Verena worked six long days last week de-tasseling corn.  By Saturday night they were tired girls. Verena’s brace rubbed her foot open in two places. I wanted her to stay home today, but she wanted to go detasseling again. (Editor’s Note: De-tasseling corn is a method of cross-pollinating various varieties of corn by removing the tassels) Benjamin is now a teenager since the 14th and  Joe and I had our 19th anniversary yesterday, July 15. Time has gone too fast. Daughter Loretta sat down one day last week to write the column. She said she wanted to do something to help me out. I am glad she did because it was good for her to put her thoughts into writing. She has a journal that she writes in, which is a good way for her to vent through this difficult trial which she is facing at this young age in her life.  Here is what she wrote:

I hope you are all doing great.  I had a wonderful day today.  For breakfast, we had grilled cheese sandwiches and cereal.  I love grilled cheese. Sister Lovina dries the dishes for me while I wash them.  Then I swept and mopped the floors. With all of us home from school the floors get tracked up fast. Mom, Elizabeth, Benjamin, Joseph, and Kevin are all out weeding in the garden. They like to go out early in the morning when it is still not so hot. Elizabeth might start her new job this week.  She will work for a lady who will train her to do professional cleaning.
