Amish Cook
Treat yourself to a delicious heavenly oatmeal bar by the Amish Cook Print E-mail

By Gloria Yoder

On Sunday evening Daniel, Julia, and I, along with some other relatives, visited my grandparents. We laughed and cheered as we watched the children try out their “train.” With their imagination at its best, they constructed a train. It consisted of two, three-wheeled bicycles as the engineers, with a nephew sitting in one of the carriers, followed by a little wagon with Julia and two other cousins. Next came a bike cart carrying a child, then after that were three small two-wheeled carts, each escorting someone. Each train car was tied to the one in front of it, making a unique yet hilarious caravan. The first attempts to get started were a bit jerky and definitely a challenge for the engineers who did their very best in pulling the heavy load. After several attempts it went more smoothly.

Another week has swiftly passed.

Friday evening was a highlight for me. Everyone in church was invited to participate in an informal singing at the school house. Throughout the evening several men shared some inspirational thoughts. Something that stood out for me was what a brother said about having hectic lifestyles and schedules. He challenged us to examine our lives to see whether we have a Jesus schedule or if we weren’t too busy to take time for what really counts in life. Afterwards we had some scrumptious snacks. Each of us  brought a finger food so we had an excellent variety to choose from.

Enjoy “stuff” for your next family meal with this easy homemade recipe Print E-mail

Last weekend we had the opportunity to host my husband Daniel’s parents and siblings from Danville, Ohio.  We always enjoy spending time together but this was an extra treat since we had not seen them for quite some time.

While they were here Daniel’s brother John, who also lives in this community, discovered they have corn that is ready to be harvested. So we rolled up our sleeves and worked together. Many hands certainly made the work light. Before long the task was completed with over 40 quarts of corn in the freezer.

It would be difficult to get much more perfect summer weather than what we have been experiencing. Last night we had a nice rain that cut the humidity and cooled everything and everyone off once more.

My 16-year-old sister, Mary Grace, who lives next door is here helping me for the day. We are doing cleaning in preparation for Daniel’s family from Danville, Ohio who plan to come for a visit this weekend. We’re excited to see them again. We also did some cooking today. With mashed potatoes being one of Daniel’s favorite hot dishes, we made  a huge batch. Then divided it into small containers to be frozen. It’s very handy to thaw and heat at a moment’s notice.

2014 is halfway over already. Hard to believe!

The sun is shining after a rainy week so we are taking advantage of the beautiful day. Benjamin, Joseph, Lovina, and Kevin are out in the garden pulling weeds. My how those weeds took over! Our garden is looking great other than the weeds.

It is Thursday already and time to get this column out in today’s mail. It hardly seems like two weeks have passed since I penned the last column. I was very happy that daughter Verena offered to write last week in my place. She loves to write so she didn’t have a problem about not getting the length of the column written. It helped out so much that I didn’t have to take time out of our busy summer schedule to write. Sometimes I can write a column in just a matter of minutes. Then there are times when so much work awaits me that I find it difficult to concentrate on writing.

Hello! This is Lovina’s daughter, Verena. Mom has been extra busy lately, so I wanted to help her out by writing the column for her this week.

Washing dishes, sweeping and mopping floors,  and watering flowers has filled my day. With having sisters Loretta-13 and Lovina-10 home from school, they can help out a lot around the house already. I like to send Lovina after my things when I feel a little lazy. Smile!

Delicious pie recipe homemade by the Amish Cook Print E-mail

It is a rainy Wednesday in June as I write this. Son Kevin’s class went to a state park in Indiana today for their school field trip, I am hoping the weather is nicer there. The temperature never went over 60 degrees so far today so it could be chilly for their nature walk through the woods.

Tonight, at 6:30 p.m., is the eight grade graduation at the school. Our fourth child, son Benjamin, will be amongst the rest of graduating from the eighth grade. This will conclude his school years. Nephew Jacob will also graduate from eight grade. Also two of Timothy’s (daughter Elizabeth’s friend) nephews are with the group graduating. One of the teachers told me this week how sad she will be to see these four boys leaving the school. She said they were always a joy to have in class.
