Doldrums is a spell of listlessness or despondency. It is also associated with that part of the ocean that lies near the equator consisting of characteristics of a boundary of calms and light shifting winds.
In early shipping days this area was also referred to as the “Horse Latitudes.” The early sailing ships depended upon winds to move the ships in travel and since there were very weak winds at this location many ships became stranded for days. When transporting horses, they would throw many of the horses overboard to lighten the ship.
