It has been a long battle but finally in 2012-13, the KHSAA recognized cheerleading as a sport activity and offered regional and state championships.

And in the 1A, Small Squad Division, the Pendleton County CheerCats hoisted the first KHSAA 10th Region Trophy.

“This means competitive cheer is recognized as a sport in KY just like basketball and golf etc.” CheerCat coach Kelley Carlisle pointed out.  “This is a significant change and we are thrilled with the change and recognition of our athletes.”

The 1A, Small Division consists of squads with 6-12 cheerleaders and from a school with 800 students or less.  The CheerCats had 12 competing with one alternative.

“We took the floor with confidence and walked off with the title!” Coach Sherry Wirth excitedly said.  “Each girl proved that day that sacrifices and paying the price, was well worth it.”
