Ernest Holmes, 76 Print E-mail

Ernest Lee Holmes, 76, of Falmouth, passed away on Wednesday, July 25, 2012,  at the family farm in Bracken County.

He was born in Pendleton County on December 31, 1935, to the late Donald and Ruth Browning Holmes.  He was married to Clara Showalter on June 4, 1955. They were the first couple married in the Oakland Christian Church, Pendleton County. He graduated from Eastern State Teachers College in 1958 and entered the U.S. Army, where he spent 21 years, attaining the rank of Lt. Col. Ernest received his Master Aviator Wings, Imperial Iranian Army Aviator Wings, the Bronze Star and was presented many honors for valor and service. After retirement from the Army, he flew for Continental Express until retiring again for medical reasons. He was an avid fisherman and loved to be out on the farm. Ernest was a member of the Oakland Christian Church, Army Otter Caribou Association, Hardin-Browning Post #109 of Falmouth and the Eastern Kentucky University Alumni Association and was named a KY Colonel.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 57 years, daughters, Lu Ann Holmes, Park Hills and Lisa (Mark) LeSuer, Crescent Springs; son, Todd (Joyce) Holmes, Columbus, Ind.; sister, Charlotte (Charles) Whaley, Falmouth;  grandchildren, Andrea (Michael) Aguayo, Brandon Tungett, Justin Holmes and Jesseca LeSuer; great-grandchildren, Abriana, Sophia and Ava; many nieces and nephews; and many friends around the world.

The funeral services were held  on Saturday, July 28, 2012, at the Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth, with Bro. John Byard, Bro. Jim Flaugher and Bro. David Monroe officiating. Special music was shared by Wayne Keith and Michael Cummins.

Serving as pallbearers were Justin Holmes, Brandon Tungett, Michael Aguayo, David Whaley, Warren Whaley, Alan Whaley, Stuart Perry and Dale Whaley.

Interment took place at the Showalter Family Cemetery, Bracken County, with full military honors by the Hardin- Browning Post #109.
