The Pendleton County Wildcats now know who their opponent will be in next weeks 38th district tournament. A draw was held to sort out the three-way tie for first place with the Wildcats ending up with the number two seed and hosting third seed Robertson County on March 15.
Harrison County won the draw and was awarded the top overall seed and will host four seed Nicholas County also on March 15. The winners of both games will meet first the district championship held at Harrison County while also securing a berth in the 10th Region Tournament, held this season at Mason County.
Pendleton County concluded its regular season with a mark of 7-11. The team has currently dropped seven straight contests including the final three games of the regular season to Augusta, Beechwood and Boone County, respectively. Some standout performances by Pendleton County during that stretch included a career-high 22 point and seven rebound showing by Jacob Redden and 24 point effort by Tredyn Thomas versus Augusta, and Braydon Kidwell posting 22 points against Boone County.
Despite the team’s recent struggles, head coach Sam Elsbernd believes his squad can turn things around and avenge their Feb. 26 loss to Robertson County and pull off an upset win on their home floor.
“I’m confident that this team can beat anyone in this district. We have time to prepare and they will be ready. I’ve said all season that they will be a tough out and if we can knock down open shots, limit our turnovers and rebound, we will be in it at the end,” he said.
Pendleton County and Robertson County will square off in the must-win contest beginning at 7:30pm.
