KHSAA Board of Control meets

With close over 9,100 viewers on their YouTube page, the KHSAA Board of Control met at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 20 to make their final decision on whether to start with practices on Monday, August 24 and games during the week of September 7.

The board what is called Option 1 to start practices on Monday, August 24 and first games the week of September 7 in the July meeting. That is the plan in place. No action was needed to move forward with that directive.

Jefferson County Public School Athletic Director Jerry Wyman made the motion to consider Option 2 which puts everything back to September 28 which was seconded by Marlon Miller.

Kirby Smith of Campbellsville was the first to speak in favor of Option 1 which was passed by the board in their July meeting and was supported by Diocese of Covington Mike Clines who indicated that most of the high schools in his region were supportive of Option 1.

The support of Option 1 continues to grow among board members as they individually speak on the issue. The issue seemed to become a divide among urban areas and rural areas.

Alvin Garrison representing NKY said that several superintendents in his area will go to their board and ask them to delay athletics in their district and not participating if Option 1 stays as the directive from the Board of Control.

A vote on Option 2 was held and the final tally was 15-3 against it.

Matt Willhoite of Kenton County made the motion to consider Option 3 would push start of soccer, volleyball and football back to the week of September 28 while allowing non-contact sports of field hockey and cross country to start on Monday, August 24.

Option 3 also fell, 13-5, but picked up two more votes on delaying the start.

Stay tuned as the meeting continues.
