Students prepare meal, ceremony for the county’s warriors, heroes

FALMOUTH — All four schools in the Pendleton County School District honored military veterans of the community veterans last Tuesday, Nov. 11, at Pendleton County High School.
Fifty-four veterans and their guests were treated to a dinner prepared by PCHS teacher Angela White’s Culinary 1 and 2 students. Guests were served salad, rolls, baked ham, baked macaroni and cheese, and Southern green beans.
Sharp Middle School’s Family, Career and Community Leaders of America organization prepared oatmeal raisin cookies and chocolate chip cakes for dessert.
Superintendent Joe Buerkley opened the program by welcoming the veterans.
PCHS Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps commanding Commander CJ Warren and American Legion Post 109 Commander Jim Sharp also welcomed the attendees.
The PCHS band performed the national anthem and an armed forces medley that featured the anthems for each branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.
Elementary students from Northern and Southern created placemats and decorated posters.
Sharp Middle School and PCHS held a Veterans Day essay contest. SMS winners Kenzi King and PCHS winner R.J. Sanders read their essays.
The gymnasium and lobby were decorated by the National Honor Society.
NJROTC lead the program, which included setting up a POW/MIA table to honor the prisoners of war and missing military.
The group held a drill team performance and wreath-laying ceremony.
Additionally, perpetual veterans’ plaques were displayed highlighting the many service members from Pendleton County Schools with the veteran’s graduation year, branch, and years of service.
