Kentuckians in NYC: Pendletonites recommend the visit

By Robyn Mayes

How do you make the most of four days in New York City? You make a plan, rest up and put on your walking shoes (or schedule an Uber, hail a cab or hop on the subway!)

Three friends, Jaime Moellman, Rachel Travis and Robin Copestick, and I — all of us rooted in Pendleton County — recently did just that. And as I’m sure a lot of Northern Kentuckians would agree, NYC seems too big, too dangerous, just too much, TOO EVERYTHING.

But trust me, after a few hours you will see it’s too much fun to not go at least once and try to experience a small piece of one of the biggest cities in the country and in the world.

The first obvious sign we weren’t in Kentucky anymore was at La Guardia International, which looks more like a mall instead of an airport.  High-end stores, a large food court and best of all — Aqua Graphic water curtains (better described as an upside-down water fountain) set to lights, videos and laser projections graced Terminal B.

From there, we hit the ground running. We were lucky to be staying a few blocks from Times Square at the Margaritaville Resort, which meant we were smack dab in the middle of the action.

The first day was spent walking the town, going to FAO Schwarz, visiting St Patrick’s Cathedral (the largest cathedral in the United States) and later making our way to Little Italy for some authentic Italian food at the popular Emilio’s Ballato — so popular we had to stand in line more than hours, but once we were served their homemade focaccia bread, all was forgiven.

I didn’t know this was a popular celebrity hangout until I looked to my immediate left and saw Chazz Palminteri at the next table. No big deal, right? Sure.
