PC Schools salute, dine area veterans

FALMOUTH — Pendleton County Schools hosted a Veterans Day program on Nov. 11 to honor local veterans.
All four schools held a part in celebrating veterans and their service to our country.
A meal was prepared and served by the Pendleton County High School Family, Career and Community Leaders of America for the visiting guests.
Sharp Middle School FCCLA prepared a dessert of banana pudding.
Each veteran received a patriotic goody bag donated by Trinity Southern Baptist Church.
A coloring contest was held for Northern and Southern elementaries kindergarten to second grade students. The nicest artwork was laminated and used as placemats for the guests.
Third to fifth grades at both schools designed posters that adorned the walls in the lobby at PCHS.
An essay contest was held for SMS and PCHS writers to explain what Veterans Day means to them.
SMS’s winner was eighth-grader Madeline Buerkley. The best entry selected at the high school level was written by Josie Wells. Both young ladies read their essays to the congregation.
The program opened with Commanding Officer R.J. Creech of the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps serving as emcee. Superintendent Joe Buerkley welcomed the veterans and their families, followed by Jim Sharp, commander of American Legion Post 109, thanking those who came and encouraging people to join Post 109.
Lt. Cmdr. C.J. Warren, PCHS NJROTC instructor, explained about the perpetual veteran plaques hanging at PCHS which recognize graduates of Pendleton County schools who have served in the armed forces.
To add someone to the plaque, he said, the service member’s name, graduation year, military branch and years of service should be emailed to clinton.warren@pendleton.kyschools.us.
The PCHS band performed the national anthem and a musical medley of military songs.
