Funke Frommeyer joins senators blasting Beshear for making order
Team Kentucky
FRANKFORT — Gov. Andy Beshear signed an executive order Wednesday officially banning the practice known as conversion therapy on minors in the state of Kentucky.
“Kentucky cannot possibly reach its full potential unless it is free from discrimination by or against any citizen — unless all our people feel welcome in our spaces, free from unjust barriers and supported to be themselves,” Beshear said.
“Conversion therapy has no basis in medicine or science, and it can cause significant long-term harm to our kids, including increased rates of suicide and depression. This is about protecting our youth from an inhumane practice that hurts them.”
Shortly after Beshear signed the executive order, a dozen state senators, all Republicans, released a statement “strongly condemning” the action as an abuse of power.
Among the senators signing the statement was Shelley Funke Frommeyer, R-Alexandria, whose district includes Pendleton County.
“Time and again, the Kentucky Supreme Court has told the governor he lacks the power to create policy in the Commonwealth. Yet again, the governor is defying the Supreme Court, the General Assembly, and the doctrine of separation of powers,” the senators’ joint statement reads.
