BUTLER — The 32nd annual Butler Cruise-In was held on the last hot Saturday in July, and this time with twist.
This year’s event was a tribute to Lions Club member Gary Veirs. Veirs, who has organized the cruise-in for more than 15 years, was unanimously chosen by the Butler Lion’s Club to be honored at the July 27 event for his many years of dedication and hard work.
T-shirts, designed by Veirs’ niece Mikala Colemire and made by Peoples’ Trophies & Embroidery were sold and given out as door prizes at the event.
Other memorabilia were given out that evening, featuring a picture of Veirs’ 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SSRS.
Veirs said he was deeply humbled by the members wanting to honor him and even argued against it — but was outvoted.
He also expressed his appreciation of the sponsors who continue to support the event year after year, and the people who continue to come to display their vehicles and to see the beautiful exhibits.
There were 74 cars, trucks and even a motorcycle that lined Mill Street next to the Butler Community Center.
Gerald and Brenda McElfresh provided music for the event, a silent auction was held, and grilled hamburgers and hot dogs were available for purchase.
Upcoming Lion’s Club events include helping with the Butler Park restoration, a River Sweep to clear out tires from the Licking River in September and selling tickets at the Kentucky Wool Fest.
The Lions Club uses money earned to provide eyewear for needy children and to fund the club’s activities.
Some of this year’s activities include Licking River Sweeps, Sharp Middle School nature trail improvements, and roadway and cemetery cleanups, among other activities.
This civic service group welcomes new members and new projects to better the community. Anyone interested should contact a club member or see their Facebook page for more information.
