Warriors support each other in their battles with cancer

By Jemi Chew

FALMOUTH — When Tonya Sweigart was diagnosed with cancer in September last year, her childhood friend Meredith Crawford wanted to purchase something for her, but she did not know what to buy that would be meaningful or helpful.

“And then one day, she made a Facebook post about (how) she wished there was a cancer support group closer without having to drive to Florence or whatever,” Crawford said. “And I was like, ‘I can help with that.’”

The two friends, who had known each other since elementary school in Butler, started to talk, plan, brainstorm ideas and reach out to community partners last November. And then it happened — the Hope Warriors cancer support group was created.

They had their first meeting this year in March with 31 people in attendance. It was a meet-and-greet type of event in which cancer survivors and caretakers swapped stories.
