Healing Out Loud: The Chair

By: Kevin Barnard, columnist

A story is told of a man, who throughout his day made an intentional decision to take time to sit in the chair…the Thanksgiving chair.

When he woke each morning, no matter how tired he was, he sat in the chair for just a moment, giving thanks for another day.

As he ate breakfast with his child, he took a seat in the chair once again, giving thanks for laughter and imaginary stories.

At work, amid the stress and the difficult people around him, he moved from the office chair to the thanksgiving chair.  And as he gave thanks for a job to provide, the attitude began to change.

That’s what sitting in the thanksgiving chair can do….it brings an attitude of gratitude. (see what I did there--I'm a poet and didn’t know it!).

No matter where your journey takes you, always take time to have a seat in that chair.

When the family gathers this week…take a seat.

When the house is filled with laughter…take a seat.

When food is served, when stories are told…take a seat.

Even when your celebrations take you to the cemetery…take a seat.

Giving thanks isn’t a common theme in our lives, especially through grief. So, make an intentional effort to take a seat, considering all your thankful for. That pause may just be the step you need to help find….healing out loud.

Happy Thanksgiving!
