Healing Out Loud:

What do I do?

By: Kevin Barnard, Columnist

You ask yourself a lot of questions when you journey through grief. Perhaps the most common question is What do I do? And it comes in many forms.

What do I do… with all these cards/flowers/funeral books? Feel guilty to throw them away, but don’t know that I’ll need them in the future.

What do I do… with these clothes? Feel guilty to get rid of them, but feel guilty that they are just hanging here in the closet.

What do I do… with traditions? Feel guilty starting new ones, but the old ones just feel different now.

What do I do… with this house? Feel guilty selling it, but doesn’t feel right staying here.

What do I do…. with all these emotions? Feel guilty when I’m happy, but don’t want to be sad all the time.

What do I do… with this grief? Feel guilty “moving on,” but feel guilty being stuck.

It’s a tough question to answer, but the reality is you will answer it for yourself in some way. You will do SOMETHING with the cards/clothes/traditions/house… even with your grief. You may choose to sit with them all for a while, or you may choose to deal with them quickly.  Your choices may be acceptable to others, or they may be questioned. But you WILL choose to do something with all the things that come along with grief.

My hope for you… in all things… make the choices that lead you to Healing out Loud.
