Charles Edward Courtney, 71, of Berry, KY, passed away on Friday, March 26, 2021 at Hospice of Hope at Kenton Pointe in Maysville, KY. Born on February 8, 1950 in Cynthiana, KY, he was the oldest son of the late Clarence Thomas Courtney, Jr. and Mildred Carolyn Adams Courtney. Charles graduated from Pendleton County High School in 1968. On February 8, 1975, he married Ann Marie Whitecotton Courtney, and for 46 years they have shared life’s journey raising their children, spoiling their grandchildren, working together on the farm, and taking care of each other, their family and friends.
Remembered for his “slow and easy” way of handling each day, Charles worked hard all of this life and pursued all kinds of interests. For 20 years, he owned and operated Enterprise Four Irrigation. He also had a sawmill for cutting lumber and buying and selling cedar logs. For over 15 years, he worked at the Paris Stockyards loading cattle. Charles had two Australian shepherds, both named Gypsy, and a pitbull named Rex which helped him herd cattle. All the while, he was farming-- raising tobacco, hay, cattle, hogs, and sheep. He was proud of the fact that he had bred a quarterhorse which sold at The Red Mile. Charles tried quarter horse barrel racing and pole bending, and he took his turn on the Clay City Drag Strip. He helped to organize the Pendleton County Fair Draft Horse Show, attended draft horse shows and pulls, and even worked on getting a team of his own.
In addition to his wife Ann, he is survived by children Jimmy (Caitlin) Courtney and Ginger (Steven) Coffey, both of Berry; grandchildren Levi Coffey, Lexi Coffey, and Rowen Courtney; brothers Greg (Pam) Courtney and Kevin (Ronnie) Courtney, both of Berry; sister Kim (Keith) Bowen of Berry; several nieces and nephews; his Australian shepherd Amos, brought home after one of his last trips with his buddies in 2014; and a host of extended family and friends.
He was also preceded in death by his sister, Pamela Carol Courtney on November 14, 2013.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 1, 2021 at Woodhead Funeral Home, 106 Main Street, Berry, KY 41003, with Pastor Tom Rector officiating.
