FALMOUTH — Gary Hicks, financial representative for WoodmenLife, organized a group of volunteers to make renovations Sept. 27 at the Veterans Park on Woodson Road at the corner of Rigg Street.
Hicks said the project began when Pendleton County resident Tammy Spicer told him of her plans to painting the fading sign at the entrance of the park. Spicer mentioned that one of the flagpoles was bent, and Hicks said he told her, “I’ll fix it for you.”
He contacted the city’s maintenance department, which said they would fix that problem. But Hicks said he began thinking of additional ways to spruce up the park.
According to Hicks, WoodmenLife sponsors up to $500 each year for a Giving Together Project. Hicks contacted maintenance department once again for approval, submitted an application outlining the Veterans Park plan, WoodmenLife approved it, and sent a check.
Then it was time to rally the troops. Hicks contacted Falmouth City Clerk Megan Crouch, and she sent out information, asking for volunteers.
On Saturday, Sept. 27, 10 volunteers, including several council members, donated their time painting tables and benches red, white and blue, stenciling inspirational quotes on tables, replacing flags, and pressure-washing sidewalks and monuments.
Along with Spicer and Hicks, Falmouth Mayor Sabrina Hazen, council members Stephen Gales, Steve Jenkins and Joyce Carson, and Christian Hutchinson, Joseph Williams, Mike Moore and Debbie Hicks spent all day at the park working but also laughing and having a good time. Even Hazen’s daughter and Carson’s granddaughter helped too.
