PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pennsylvania — “Lordy, Lordy, it’s nearly forty!” exclaim the mass of groundhog devotees in unison as the 138th Groundhog Day took place on an uncharacteristically warm and snowless Feb. 2, 2024. 

Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, the hometown of this yearly extravaganza, was a dry and balmy 36 degrees upon my 4:45 a.m. arrival at Gobbler’s Knob. Although the show had already begun at 3 a.m., my fellow Groundhogger Friends and I decided to stop by the “Hogspitality” Village to fuel up with food and warm beverages before settling in the crowd. 

If you’ve never seen Gobbler’s Knob, you might envision a foggy Brigadoon-like site in the middle of the woods. You would not be far off. 

Punxsutawney, home of the Knob, is a remote Pennsylvanian borough boasting the main attraction - the stage where Punxsutawney Phil famously makes his prediction for the rest of the winter. 

Will it be early spring or six more weeks of winter? Only the groundhog knows. . .
