FALMOUTH — How does a Grant County boy and a Pendleton County girl meet, marry and stay together for 70 years? It’s all about knowing the right place to eat!
Charley Herron and Dorothy Powell both traveled to Covington in the 1950s looking for work.
These two strangers visited the same diner — K&K Restaurant at 10th and Madison — and struck up a conversation. The conversation led to a date, then another, and the rest, as they say, is history.
As the two began dating, they didn’t go “no place special, just rode around, went to Devou Park,” Charley said.
At that time, both snagged jobs in Covington: Charley at Wadsworth Electric and Dorothy at R. L. Polk, so a stroll around the Covington park seemed a good place to go and get to know each other.
The couple were married April 10, 1955, at Mount Pleasant Church in Grant County.
Charley’s older brother, Hugh Lee Herron, who was the minister there, performed the ceremony.
They first lived in Covington, then later moved to Pendleton County. The Herrons have lived on their farm in southeastern Pendleton County since 1963.
They raised three children — Steve, Pam and Keith — in the same house they are living in today. The family worked together on the farm, raising cattle, tobacco and a garden.
Charley and Dorothy were ever present members of the Pendleton County Farmers Market for 22 years, working side-by-side on the farm to raise the products they sold. Their grandson, Jordan, took over the reins selling produce and can be seen at PCFM.
When asked, “How did you know she was the one?” Charley responded, “How does anyone know?”
And his advice for people getting married today, “Give and take.”
The couple celebrated 70 years of marriage on April 10, 2025. The family, consisting of three children, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren held a celebration for this couple reaching their landmark anniversary.
